What can I do to support someone I know who has a vestibular condtion?
If you know someone with a vestibular disorder, it's helpful to understand more about their condition.
Vestibular disorders are not characterised by the usual visible symptoms and so it can be bewildering for friends, relatives and colleagues. One minute a person looks perfectly healthy and is engaging in 'normal' activities and the next they may be experiencing a severe vertigo attack, unable to walk, are vomiting and distressed.
Ask them how you can best support them.
The symptoms of vestibular conditions can vary, so people will be affected differently, depending on their diagnosis and how they are affected by their symptoms. By being informed, you can help them to feel supported and more confident.
Life is likely to be disrupted from time to time, plans may have to change suddenly and appointments cancelled without any prior warning. Listen to their fear and anxieties - they are real and understandable because no one can predict when a vertigo attack or other debilitating symptoms are going to occur. It can take a few days; sometimes longer, to get back to normal activities after a vertigo attack. It is important that the person affected is seen by a specialist experienced in treating vestibular disorders, if their symptoms change or they have any concerns.
What is needed most is your reassurance, understanding, patience and acceptance to help them manage their vestibular condition and symptoms. You can also download our information for family, friends and colleagues.
